In a move that’s sure to stir up controversy, a regional police force has enlisted the help of a career car criminal and former drug addict to help them curb Christmas car crime.
Leicestershire police force have recruited a 25-year-old former thief who broke into more than 100 cars over a ten-year period as well as shoplifting and committing burglary to fund a £50-a-day heroin addiction.
The police aide, known only as ‘James’, has served two prison sentences but claims to have now overcome his drug addiction and turned his back on a life of crime in order to give something back to the community.
James is looking to give the police and public an insight into the mind of a car criminal and show exactly what car thieves look for in the hope that motorists will take the necessary steps to minimize the risk of having their car broken into or stolen.
James said: “I’d go out at night and try car doors and boots. It’s hard to believe how many people leave their cars unlocked. It doesn’t matter what car it is, you can get into any car through the boot. I once stole a £700 camera that had been left in the boot of an unlocked car.
He added: “I’d also peer in the windows to see if there was anything left in the car. If I thought something was there I wouldn’t think twice, I’d just pop the window. People sometimes leave things like sat navs and the front of radios under seats, but that’s the first place I would look. Even if I thought I’d only get a fiver for something, I’d still break in. When you’re on drugs you want anything you can get.”
And car criminals target motorists at Christmas time as they know that many cars will be laden with presents as shoppers drop off bags before continuing their shopping. Car thieves also bank on the fact that many people get stressed out and rush around when Christmas shopping and generally less vigilant and more likely to leave items in the car’s cabin or even leave their car unlocked!
This is something that Inspector Toby Day of Leicestershire police force has observed and feels is one reason for the upsurge in car crime at this time of year.
Inspector Day said: “We also find that, despite repeated warnings from the police, people still leave items on show in their vehicles which is often all the invitation a thief needs to break in. We hope that by working with James, we can give motorists an insight into the type of things which encourage criminals to break into certain cars and measures members of the public can take to prevent this.”

Is going solo in an unknown area the right way to go, or are you wanting a tour guide to show you the highlights? I believe that you can blend the 2 ways in one trip and have the best of two worlds.
One trip we took a while back was to Washington D.C. I have seen it 4 times, and will often go back. Rumour has it, there had been a wine basement that was boarded up and sealed away. I suggest both.
