You need to choose a car rental and hire agency for all your touring needs. But how will you know you got the best deal? There are hundreds—maybe thousands—of companies and options out there, and it can be intimidating to try to sort everything out.
There are several things you can do to make sure you’re getting the best touring deal, though. First, write down some of the most important things for your car rental. Do you need a large vehicle to carry people, toys, and luggage? Or is a smaller car with a lower price tag more important? How about gas mileage? With the price of gasoline at record highs, this could end up being a primary consideration. Also, if you’ll be driving in a large metropolitan area, parking may be a consideration. A large vehicle may not fit into a parking garage too well.
Another important aspect to consider is the length of time you’ll need the car, as discounts are often available for longer periods. The rates for a week-long rental or even several weeks will often be negotiable.
Almost all rental cars come with air conditioning, but if you’ll be traveling in a warm climate, be sure to ask! You may be surprised to find the car doesn’t have it. If not see what the extra charge is, or shop around for a car with air conditioning.
What about some of the newer accessories? Most new cars now come equipped with power ports for plugging in electrical gadgets, and mp3 hookups for music players. This can definitely make the trip seem much shorter, especially for the kids. Even if you have to pay a little extra for these things, you could find them well worth the money.
You’ll want to think about more than price when renting, though. What about service? Although most car hires work flawlessly, be sure to ask what kind of service the rental company offers if you do run into trouble. For instance, what’s the procedure for a flat tire? What about more serious trouble, like engine problems? Do they offer roadside assistance? Is that included, or is it a separate purchase on your part.
What about rental returns? If you’re later than estimated, is there any kind of a grace period? How much extra is charged? Some companies charge by the hour for tardy returns, some charge an entire day’s rental fee if you’re a little late. Be sure to ask what the grace period is, just in case.
If you already belong to the loyalty club for one or more car rental companies, check their rates. Often, members of a rental company’s loyalty partnership will be able to get discounts not given to the general public, or get a car-class upgrade. Especially for a longer road trip, that extra bit of room in your car—for the same price—might make the difference between a so-so vacation and a memorable one.
Choosing the car rental and hire agency for your next trip or auto tour is worth your time as it will ensure you end up with a more comfortable vacation for much less money.
