If you compare car hire prices, you’ll find the best bargain on car rental. There are many rental companies out there competing for your business, and you can use that competition to your advantage.
First of all, it’s imperative that you decide ahead of time what kind of car you want, and for how long. That way you can compare the same deal from different companies, and truly determine the best bargain. Many companies will try to talk you into a higher (more expensive) class of car or “throw in” some additions that will end up costing you money in the long run. Stick to your guns for the negotiation part of the deal, so you can truly compare prices.
Check the internet. Many car companies will advertise their current deals on their website. Especially during periods of low demand, you may find some very good bargains by checking a few websites. While times of demand can vary, high demand is usually throughout the summer, during the Holiday season, and around school holidays or 3-day weekends.
Now check the travel websites. Sometimes online sites like Kayak.com, Orbitz, or Travelocity will obtain special concessions or buy blocks of car rentals at special prices. Of course, the time periods for these special deals may be limited, so try various dates if you have some flexibility.
After using the internet to find advertised prices, pick up the phone and call. Many times companies will have unadvertised specials and you can’t find out about those unless you ask. If your dates are flexible, ask about upcoming specials as well. Sometimes the best deal is just around the corner!
When you compare the car hire prices that you find, be sure to ask about any fees, taxes, or other charges that might raise the price of your rental. Many times the price you are quoted is the base; all those mandatory “extras” can raise the price quite a bit. Be sure to clarify everything that’s included in your rental so there are no unpleasant surprises.
If you have one or two car rental companies that you prefer to use, see if there are any specials for members of their frequent-renter club. You may already be a member, and companies are often very willing to make a deal or grant concessions to customers who have a track record with the company.
Another thing you can do is check for any discounts associated with your company, any organizations to which you belong, or even your age! While younger drivers may have to pay a little more, more “experienced” drivers can often get a discount. Organizations like AAA or AARP offer their members discounts on many products and services, including automobile rentals.
So line up all your possibilities for discounts, use the internet and the telephone, and compare car hire prices to make sure you get the best bargain on your car rental.
