Get a car rental in Las Vegas on a phone call? Sure, it can be done!
Las Vegas is just about the center of the universe for car rentals. Everyone from the casino handyman to rock stars looks to rent a car, and a phone call is the best way to find out what’s available and secure yourself a great price.
Las Vegas has small, local car rental agencies, companies that rent very economical used cars and big national chains that rent only the newest models. There are also plenty of companies that specialize in renting exotic or performance cars—for a price.
Yet demand fluctuates wildly in Sin City, and you can often use the phone to secure yourself a great car for a fabulous price. Weekends are a prime time to get a deal by calling and asking.
The vast majority of convention and business travelers arrive in Las Vegas on a Monday, ready to wheel and deal. And they often leave on a Thursday or Friday. That leaves the weekend—Saturday and Sunday, and often Friday and/or Monday—as days of off-peak demand.
All those cars that will have drivers by Monday afternoon are sitting vacant over the weekend, costing the rental company money. Your phone call can often swing an excellent deal. After all, the rental company just needs to make enough money to cover their overhead on the car, and that amount is often well below the advertised rental rate.
So decide what type of car you’d like, and for how long. Then pick up the phone. Start with companies you’ve dealt with before, especially if you’re a member of their frequent-renter club. They’re more likely to be willing to bargain if they know you’re a repeat customer. After all, it’s far cheaper to keep a customer than it is to go out and get a new one, especially in the cutthroat business of car rentals.
During your phone call, explain clearly the type of vehicle you’re looking for, the period for which you’d like to rent, and that you’re calling around to find the best deal. Don’t sign up for the first offer you get!
Write down all the details, and then call a few more rental companies. Telephone calls cost you little or nothing—and the savings you could realize on this rental alone should more than pay for all your calls. Be sure to compare the bottom line price, including all taxes, assessments, and fees. Once you have all the data, you can make an informed decision.
Call back the best offer you got, and let them know that you have several other offers, but you’d prefer to rent with them. Remind the person of the quote you originally got from their company, and ask if they can do better. Sometimes this will bring out the mention of a coupon or other discount that wasn’t mentioned the first time you spoke.
After negotiating your best deal, go down and pick up that car and enjoy every minute of driving that shiny vehicle. You deserve it!
