When visiting Portugal for either business or pleasure, a car hire is highly recommended. The country has over 1200 kilometers of border, much of which includes the Atlantic Ocean. Driving the coastal routes is a recipe for rest and relaxation, and a car hire is definitely the way to go.
Whether you arrive in the capital city of Lisbon or one of the smaller cities, Portugal is sure to please you. The River Tagus splits the country nearly in two: to the north is a verdant, hilly country, and to the south you’ll find the terrain one of smoothly rolling hills, with a drier climate and warmer temperatures.
The Portuguese drive on the right-hand side of the road, something U.K. visitors will need to remember. You must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid U.K. driver’s license or International Driving Permit, along with current liability and comprehensive automobile insurance to drive in Portugal. Your identification and all required documentation must be with you at all times and displayed to authorities when requested.
There are many companies that offer car hire in Portugal, so it’s wise to shop around before your trip to obtain the best deal. Use the Internet, call ahead, or get a recommendation from a friend or business acquaintance in Portugal for reputable companies that offer car hires at good prices. Decide on the type of car you’d like to hire, along with any extras that you want quoted in your price, like luggage carriers or car seats, and then request these with your quotes. Be sure to ask what type of insurance is offered by your own auto insurance company, and only purchase needed coverage from the rental company. You’ll generally get a better price from your own insurance agent than from a car hire company.
Check for specials or coupons, even Internet coupons that can save you money. Many car rental companies offer extra savings to people who sign up for their preferred customer clubs. Very often joining these clubs is free, and can save you an additional ten percent or so on your rental. If you ring up the rental company, ask if they’re offering any specials. Competition between car hire companies is keen, and a special may be offered if you ask in order to obtain your business.
Once you’ve decided on a company, read your contract carefully before signing. Make sure no “extras” have been added to your contract that weren’t quoted to you originally. Does your rental include unlimited mileage? Portugal is a large country, and beautiful from one end to the other. You’re likely to drive more than you imagine, so be sure you don’t pay for it when you turn the car in.
Obey the rules from the moment you pick up your car hire! Traffic fines in Portugal are severe. Do not use your mobile phone while driving! Penalties for speeding, illegal parking, and driving under the influence of just about anything are heavily fined; as soon as you’re identified as someone from out of the area the fines may go up, because what are the odds that you’ll want to remain in the country or return to fight the ticket? If you’re from out of town, it’s almost a sure thing the municipality can wring more money out of you, so follow all the traffic laws to the letter!
If you do that, though, you’ll find Portugal a warm, welcoming country, with a picturesque landscape from north to south. A car hire is the best way to appreciate all Portugal has to offer, and is money well spent.
