San Antonio, Texas is the seventh largest city in the United States and is considered by many to be the cultural gateway to the American Southwest. As such it is no stranger to tourists, welcoming an estimated twenty million each year.

San Antonio’s attractions include the ever-popular River Walk, which takes visitors on a pleasant ramble through the downtown area, where they can indulge in the numerous shops, bars and restaurants. The Alamo, site of the siege that has become the most famous single event of the Texas War of Independence, is located within driving distance. This is the top Texas tourist destination, while the River Walk is the second most popular.

Also located within San Antonio are SeaWorld San Antonio, the world’s largest marine theme park and Six Flags Fiesta Texas, a seasonally operated theme park, which includes free entrance to a water park.

Whether coming into the city via San Antonio International Airport or by one of the three major freeways that serve the city, you’ll most definitely be in need of some form of transport. There are branches for every major car rental company, such as Hertz, Budget and Avis, located in the city. At the airport, most of these same companies have kiosks and counters, which are conveniently situated near the baggage terminal.

Before you rent a vehicle, take the time to consider several things. For instance, how many people are going with you; is it a family trip or a working vacation for one person, when are you going, summer or winter and finally, are you going during the peak tourist months or after the season has ended?

If it’s a family trip, consider renting a mini-van or other luxury vehicle. Comfort is important, especially with children to consider. Texas has a lot of wide open spaces and a van can offer you a positive driving experience. Including a Sirius Satellite Radio system or even a DVD player can provide something to keep your passengers, young and old, occupied while you get on with the business of getting to those all important tourist attractions. Also, consider adding a GPS to your rental. It comes in handy for when the Alamo seems to have moved from where you last thought it was.

If you’re planning a road trip of the more grown-up persuasion, think of renting something slightly more stylish. The latest model sports cars and premium-class vehicles are available from all reliable car rental services. This is the perfect opportunity to get behind the wheel of that automobile you’ve been slavering over in the showroom. Vacations are for enjoying yourself, after all.

If it’s a business trip, most rental services provide any number of business-oriented vehicles at low prices. Compact and mid-size cars are great ways for the lone traveler to save some dough. If, on the other hand, you want something a bit flashier, perhaps to impress your peers, then there’s always the latest make and model, just sitting in the lot, waiting for you.

So, if you’re planning a trip out west, San Antonio provides numerous opportunities for the traveler, casual or otherwise, to try something new with their car rental.
